It was founded by refuges of the ancient Montecorvino, first destroyed in 1137 by Roger II, plundered by king Ladislaw in 1332 and burned by Alphonse of Aragon and finally razed to the ground by an earthquake in 1456. The population of Montecorvino founded the three centers of Motta Montecorvino, Pietramontecorvino and Volturino.
