This small center is situated in the Daunia Mountains, along the right bank of the upper Fortore river.
The town was founded in the Middle Ages, when it was a fiefdom of the Giliberti family. There was in the late 19th and 20th century a massive emigration; in San Nicolas, Argentina, there is a community of over 400 carlantinesi.
