The name comes from the ancient Messapian acropolis called "Hyria", and is situated on a hill in a domineering position over the Tavoliere plateau of the bordering Lecce province. The historical center has typical whitewashed houses, and an ancient quarter called Giudecca where a lively Jewish community flourished in medieval times.
