History

It was the most important alpine settlement of the Romans. The city has maintained its layout of Roman times: the roman camp, which according to Pliny the Younger was decorated with remarkable monuments, formed a basis for further urban development. The walls, built in the 12th century and still partly visible (Porta Torre), were an extension of the Roman walls from Imperial times and contain the town's historical centre which is still called the "città murata" (=the walled city).
