The name of this center was probably ispired by the the geological structure of the hill, mainly sand. The territory is rich in vineyards and produces an excellent quality of wine, served in many restaurants with the name of vino della casa ("wine of the house").

It was an ancient tuff cave at the time of the Romans. During a war against the state of the church for the conquest of the Roman duchy, king Astolfo decided to build a Lombard tower (756 AD) in order to contol the main routes between south and central Italy.
