The original name of the place was Villa Sclavia, then Villa Schiavi, under the Benedictine Abbey of San Salvatore Telesino. The toponym derives from "sclavi", the immigrant population from Dalmatia that settled around the Benedictine monastery. In 1487 the fief of Villa Schiavi was proclaimed a royal property, then became a possession of the Carafa, lords of Formicola. In 1862 the municipality changed its name to "Liberi".
