San Sossio Baronia, Province of Avellino, Campania

Province of Avellino
San Sossio is located in the historical area called Baronia, on the border with Puglia, on the northern side of the ridge that divides the valleys of the Ufita river and that of its tributary Fiumarella, in the upper Calore basin.
Surrounded by hills and foothills, the village is partially protected from the severity of cold winters, and the presence of woods all around considerably attenuates the heat of the summer months, giving the place a pleasurable climate.

History

There was probably a Roman settlement in the area, since the remains of a Roman bridge can be seen in the neighbourhood, but the first mention of the village date back to the year 1299, when it was a hamlet of Vico. Afterwards it was property of the Del Balzo Orsini and De Loffredo families. San Sossio was a brigands' land: already at the time of Giovanna I D'Angiò there is mention of army fighting against bands of highwaymen. The historic center was destroyed several times by earthquakes, but still a few, interesting architectural monuments are today preserved.
