History

The name of the place may be derived from the family name Laganà or from the greek Lachanàs meaning "seller of vegetables".

The settlement may have started in the 5th century BC with a group of people coming from Focea, the Greek colony in Asia Minor; more settlements possibly took place in the 10th century AD with refugees escaping from the Saracen invasions in the Gallico and Catona areas, and during the 14th century with the citizens of Calanna after the Aragonese destroyed their castle.

The village was a fiefdom of the Calanna family until 1806 when the feudal system was abolished in Italy. In 1783 and 1908 earthquakes seriously damaged the village.
