Montescaglioso, Province of Matera, Basilicata
The town rises on a hill over the fertile valley of the Bradano river and the Matera ravine in the archaeological, historical and natural area of the Murgia Materana park, and is an important historical-cultural center, known as the "city of monasteries" for the presence of four monastic complexes.

What to see
- The abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, at the top of the town, surrounded by 15th-century walls, hosting cycles of frescoes of the 17th and 18th centuries.
