The town rises on a hill over the fertile valley of the Bradano river and the Matera ravine in the archaeological, historical and natural area of the Murgia Materana park, and is an important historical-cultural center, known as the "city of monasteries" for the presence of four monastic complexes.

Montescaglioso was the site of one of the most important Benedictine monasteries in Basilicata.

What to see

  • The abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, at the top of the town, surrounded by 15th-century walls, hosting cycles of frescoes of the 17th and 18th centuries.
