Italian Regions

Italy is is divided into 20 Regions, which, apart from Valle d'Aosta, are furtherly subdivided into Provinces.
Each Province is divided into "Comuni" (over 8100), and a comune may be subdivided into "Frazioni" (= hamlets, districts, over 35,000). Italian Provinces have existed for many centuries, but since 1 Jan 2015 most of their administrative functions have been trasferred to the regions or communes. However, the Provinces still remain as geographical and historical entities.
