The Maremma Natural Park, established in 1975, is better known as Parco dell'Uccellina. The Uccellina are a group of hills along the coastline of the Maremma, which divide the plain of the Ombrone to the north from the plain od the Albegna river to the south, in the municipalities of Grosseto, Magliano in Toscana and Orbetello.
The area is covered by dense maquis and east, at the foot of the mountains, vast grasslands, where at the Spergolaia Farm is the park administrative center. This was where the "butteri" used to raise - and still partly do - their flocks and herds. The buttero is a shepherd on horseback typical of the Maremma, the Roman Campagna and the Pontine area. The name derives from the Greek boútoros (= man that goads oxen). This figure can be considered the Italian equivalent of an American cowboy.
