The whole province, with a population of over 4 million, is mostly an extension of Rome metropolitan area along the Thyrrhenian Sea, where the international airports of Fiumicino and Ciampino are situated, while the hinterland going westward becomes more hilly and mountainous.
Apart from the innumerable artistic treasures in the city of Rome, which includes the independent enclave of Vatican City, the province offers an outstanding wealth of landscapes. There are on the outskirts of the province rural areas producing high-quality wines and oil, volcanic lakes of grat environmental beauty as Bracciano, Nemi and Bolsena, sites of archeological significance as Tivoli - also famous for its spas - or Ostia Antica, the harbours of Anzio, Ostia and Civitavecchia, and fashionable beach resorts as Fregene and Lido di Ostia.
