Italian Regions

Each Region is furtherly divided into Provinces [for total 110], and each of the Provinces is divided into "Comuni" or municipalities (for over 8100 Italian Comuni, see the alphabetical list of Italian Communes); a comune may then be subdivided into "Frazioni" (= hamlets, districts, over 35,000 - see the list of the Italian Frazioni).

Official websites of Italian communes usually offer news, upcoming events, history, contact details of civil records offices; and Official websites of Regions & Provinces are a good starting point to increase knowledge of specific areas.
