Province of Pistoia, Toscana (Tuscany) Region, Italy

The province is not connected to the sea and comprises three main geographical areas: the Ombrone Plain south-east with the capital Pistoia, Valdinievole to the southwest, with the important spa resort of Montecatini Terme and the Pistoiese mountains to the north with the ski resort of Abetone and the Gavinana Ecomuseum.

History

It was part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, and was established as a province in 1927 with the municipalities Agliana, Cutigliano, Lamporecchio Larciano Marliana, Montale, Pistoia, Piteglio, San Marcello Pistoia, Pistoia Serravalle and Tizzana (Quarrata today) previously belonging to the province of Florence, and in 1928 acquired the communes of Valdinievole from the province of Lucca.

What to see

The province is the seat of the first Eco-Museum established in Italy (in 1990), with central seat at Gavinana, including six different itineraries in the open and in historical centres and palaces: ice, iron, stone, sacred art, everyday life, naturalistic itineraries. The province is renowned also for the Abetone skiing facilities and the spa establishments at Montecatini.
