A well-known Samnite and then Roman town, after the fall of the Roman empire, it became part of the Lombard dukedom of Benevento, to pass later to the countdom of Molise. Under the Pandone family Venafro was a center of great importance, then it passed to Filiberto Challons, to Cardinal Pompeo Colonna, and finally to the Caracciolo.

The town is rich of archeological remains, such as the amphitheater, right in the center, over which houses were built in the course of time, and a great number of other items partly collected in the Museo Nazionale Archeologico.
