Italy is is divided into 20 Regions, which, apart from Valle d'Aosta, are furtherly subdivided into Provinces [for total 110].
Each Provinces then is divided into "Comuni" (over 8100 Italian Comuni in all), and a comune may be subdivided into "Frazioni" (= hamlets, districts, over 35,000 in all). Italian Provinces have existed for many centuries, but since 1 Jan 2015 their administrative functions are being dismissed. The Provinces still remain as geographical entities, and are 110 (including newly established ones & Aosta which is not actually a province).
