The province consists of 108 communes and borders the province of Teramo, Pescara and Chieti to the east, Isernia to the south, Rieti to the west. The territory is mountainous, with wide plateaus and valleys, rich in waters. It has an area of 5034 sq km, and a total population of 304,000 inhabitants according to the last census. The main resources are agriculture, breeding, industries, tourism. Main centers: L'Aquila, the province capital, Avezzano, Sulmona, Scanno, Tagliacozzo, Celano, Roccaraso.
